If you plan on sharing your Acme with another computer, turn on Network Discovery and map a drive or use UNC (preferred) to your data server. Repeat on each computer you install Acme on.
Note, it is possible to map a drive or use UNC without having network discovery turned on, but if you do not turn on network discovery the Acme installer cannot browse (discover) the share.
If you have more than one store, install Central first, load data in it and them back it up and restore at each satellite store. DO NOT install Satellites then empty / refill, it gets the location records wrong since empty re-creates one INVLOC record that is not same as the one in sample data. The backup restore method also forces change of store number, and store type before they can enter transactions. One drawback to backup / restore is that the the satellite Acme ends up with records in invonhand for all location, but these can be easily deleted.
Windows XP Credentials -NO LONGER SUPPORTED
If you normally log into your computer as a Limited User you must log in as an Administrative User to install Acme, then share the acmepos and acmepos\data folders so that Acme will function properly under your limited user account. If you do not you will receive “cannot update the cursor / read only” message illustrated below when launching Acme.
Note: Support for Windows XP has been discontinued by Microsoft. In all cases we suggest you upgrade to another operating system as soon as possible. Do not process electronic payments on a computer running XP.
Windows 7/8/10 Credentials
If you normally log into your computer as a Standard User you can install Acme by right clicking the installer, choosing “run as” and entering admin credentials.
If you encounter issues during installation or upgrade that appear to be permissions based e.g. “unable to create file/directory” try these:
1.Shut off firewall and anti-virus.
2.Add domain admin as user to local computer. This will bypass most “software restriction policies”. (AppLocker and GPO)
3.Shut off UAC.
4.If installing data onto a network resource ensure that DNS is working properly. If you are having problems a simple test is to use the IP address of the remote machine instead of the machine name or mapped drive. Do not use this test configuration in a production environment unless you use static IP addresses.
If you have a CD Insert the disk and the installation program should start to run, if it does not, or if you need to “run as” admin then use Windows Explorer to browse the CD-ROM and run the EXE as administrator.
If you downloaded AcmeInstaller.exe double click it or right click and run as administrator.
Follow the on screen prompts. Some are shown below...
User information (above) is NOT tied to your activation codes or store name. You may enter whatever you wish.
Your Destination Location should always be on a local hard drive. The default is c:\acmepos and this works well on most computers.
Single Computer:
Use the default Database Folder c:\AcmePOS\Data unless you want to run Acme on more than one computer.
Multiple Computers:
Supply a network path to your server. On the server create and share a folder called Acme. Give all users full control of the Acme database folder.
Depending on volume, stores with 1-4 lanes may use a fast point of sale terminal as a server.
You can map a drive letter for the Acme Database folder but using UNC is preferred.
If you map each workstation to the Acme share, best practice is to use same drive letter on each workstation but that is not essential. To make drive mapping easier consider using a log on script and running it via network log on (domain) or startup folder batch file (workgroup). See Sample Log-on batch files elsewhere in this document. If you need help mapping a network drive please see technical support.
You can start by putting the data on your local computer C drive and move it later if you like. See details elsewhere in this document.
Acme is now ready to run.
Note, if you failed to follow the recommendations above regarding Windows Credentials and "run as admin" you may see the error below:
error 111 at line 0 of setvalue
Cannot update the cursor APPREG02_DBF, since it is read only.
Please uninstall and re-install following above instructions or consider contacting Total BusinessWare or your Solution Provider for assisted installation.
