This topic is in reference to the Acme Office Supplies sample company data.

The Acme Sample Data has purchasing set up in most of the most common AND powerful manners. Items with multiple vendors have the lowest cost vendor marked as "Preferred".

Most items have a Reorder Point of 6 and Target Stock Level of 9. Vendor minimum order requirements may come into play.

One item is explained here...

In Acme Setup Information >POS Options 3 Tab "Get PLU Quantity Factor From" is set to "UOM Factor".

In >Inventory >Unit of Measure the units of measure are set up like this:

UOM Setup

The UOM Codes sort perfectly and are easy to type. The descriptions are concise and the Factors handle the math, telling Acme how many items are in the unit.  One item is set up like this:

Reorder Point is one of the most useful triggers for suggested order. It is also used as your "build to" number unless trumped by higher Vendor Minimum, Standard Order Quantity, or Target Stocking Level.

Over / Short is calculated by taking Reorder Point or Target Stock Level (whichever is higher) minus "On Order" plus "On Hand". If on hand is negative then 0 is used.

In the case above we are short 17 because Target is 36 and On Hand is 19 and we have 0 on order.

If we generated a PO worksheet FOR PREFERRED VENDOR based on above Acme would suggest you order 17 unless the Vendor Minimum Order or increments of the Purchasing Unit of Measure required more. See Item Purchasing Tab below.

Standard Order Quantity is optional, but useful in some cases if you almost always order a given number regardless of what is On Hand or what the Reorder Point / Target Stocking Level is. You can use this to create Suggested Orders and Manual Purchase Orders.

Based on the example above, the Suggested Order Quantity will be for 4 cases of 6 unless you choose to ignore Vendor Minimum Order when creating the PO Worksheet.
