Acme accommodates GS1-128 bar codes. The AIM Code IDs must be turned on in the scanner for GS1-128 to be interpreted. If off, then the scan is processed just like any other scan. Since the number of digits can exceed Acme’s Item Number and PLU limit of 25 characters, using AIM codes is highly recommended.
The GS1-128 bar code is complicated and can embed multiple data elements. It is used for a lot of different industries within the GS1 universe. The sample incorporates:
1.GTIN-14, the item number: 99426841069572
2.Packaging date: 2022/04/26
3.Product net weight: 6.45 lbs
4.Serial number: 123456789
GS1-128 is the UCC/EAN-128 (Code 128) symbology; renamed. However, GS1 also defines the kind of data and the data format in GS1-128. It is a "derivative language".
Each data element in the bar code is prefixed by a 2-digit application identifier. In the human readable text, these are the numbers in parenthesis with the actual data following. Some data elements such as serial number are variable length. There is no set standard that requires data elements to fall in a fixed order.
Ticket entry recognizes GS1-128 first by the AIM identifier. Acme recognizes three app IDs: “01” for GTIN, “310n” for net weight in kilograms, and “320n” for net weight in pounds; “n” is the implied decimal place. If both net weights are included in the scan, then the second is the winner. Acme skips all other app IDs with their data and stops parsing the scan when a variable length app ID is encountered.
Note:
1.Because the net weight is embedded in the bar code, Acme could actually use the net weight for the detail quantity and calculate an extension. similar to price embedded bar code. This assumes Acme has current List Price. If price is printed on the label over-stickering would be required if the price per pound changes while there is product on the shelf. TIP: If possible, do not print price on the label! Inquire if support for this is desired.
2.At time of this writing, GS1-128 bar codes cannot be directly scanned into item maintenance or anywhere else an item number can be entered. Use search on description OR type the 14 digits that follow the (01).
3.When setting up items in Acme the item number should be 14 digits. Using example above 99426841069572
