UPC bar coded data can be entered into Acme's Item Number field or as a PLU.
To help insure scanner accuracy we recommend that you rely on your scanner to calculate check digits whenever possible.
If you have an inventory database that does not include check digits we have utilities available that can calculate them for you.
Acme can recognizes almost every type of bar code found in retail worldwide. Acme can print many label formats as well.
UPC-A codes normally contain twelve digits. (see illustration below)
Ideally the scanner should be set to read all 12 digits, do a calculation on the first eleven digits and compare the results to the last (check) digit. This capability can be turned on and off in most scanners, but generally this is turned on by default.
Acme has Inferred Item Lookup capability to help with the following situations...
•If your UPC-A database does only contains 10 digits then odds are the first and last digit (UCC Prefix and Check digit) are missing.
•Some accounting systems (QuickBooks, maybe others..) convert UPC-A to EAN-13 in the background.
