This tutorial assumes the computer we are taking portable does NOT currently run Acme in your store. In other words, we are not breaking out an existing checkout lane to take portable, we are creating a new lane.

Please also see Portable Terminal Introduction

We are going to build a "template data set' that can be backed up and restored onto each portable terminal.

Start in the store's copy of Acme, -set up the Portable Terminal record(s)

In the store copy of Acme, set up a terminal record to be used exclusively for each portable. Do not re-use a terminal record that has been used on another computer. In our example below we have chosen terminal 01-REG06 and we have changed its description accordingly

Every terminal record must have a unique terminal number. There is generally no need to alter terminal numbers.

Change Default Customer and Walk In Tax location Code as necessary. Set up as much terminal hardware as possible, for example bar code scanners, receipt printers etc, especially if you are deploying multiple portables. -the configuration can be changed later on the portable terminal but doing it now reduces downstream work.

Users in Portable Acme should not have privilege to edit items or they should use with caution. Pricing records (if any) will be removed upon next import.

Setup Acme Users

If Acme users are known and you wish to make them part of your template data set them up now.

In Acme click >File >Administration >Edit User Accounts.

Create the Acme Template Data backup file.

Get exclusive use of Acme and use Acme Data Pump to back up your data. Enter a suitable name for the backup file. Since this data will be used as a template for the portables we changed the file name to suit our purpose (shown above). Make a note of the full path to the backup file, you will need it later.

Send the backup data to each user that will be responsible for installing a portable terminal. Small to medium sized files (generally less than 10-15) can probably be emailed. Larger files may need to be copied to removable media or sent via FTP site.

Restore the Acme Template Data on the Portable Terminal(s)

On each portable terminal:

1.Install same version of Acme and Acme Data Pump as you have in the store.

2.Restore the backup made in the previous section of this document.

3.Brand the computer using the terminal record created in the previous section.

4.Edit Store Type in Acme Options and make the installation a Portable Acme.

5.Launch Data Pump and click >Multi Store >Setup
If you will be using FTP enter the server name, user and password that were provided. Click SAVE, then SETUP and if you will be using Local, network or VPN hard disk enter the appropriate path. If you will be using FTP enter site information and credentials. Test FTP, the server should respond with:
"SUCCESS" and "PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE".

Congratulations, your Portable Acme is configured!

In Acme Data Pump click >Multi Store. Then use the Get and Send buttons to transfer data between copies of Acme as needed.  This is typically done on a daily basis but can be done more or less often to suit your business needs.
