The Acme Data Miner can be used to print labels to rolled stock on Dymo LabelWriter printers as well as to 8.5 x 11 sheet label stock on laser and ink-jet printers.
-Sheets are sometimes preferred when there are a lot of labels to print. For example when setting up a new store.
-Rolls are sometimes preferred because they produce no "end of sheet" waste.
Sheet labels require the Data Miner Designer. Sheet label sizes are predefined but you design your own label layouts. We do not supply sheet label layouts and do not handle printing to partially used sheets. Since every print job requires a full sheet of labels* sheet labels are generally reserved for times when you are printing lots of labels.
* With sheet labels you can keep partial sheets to feed in 'backwards" on subsequent runs, assuming the top and bottom margins are identical.
If you have the Data Miner Designer you can also create your own labels for rolled stock as well. See F1 help in the Designed for details.
Page / Label Size Print and Preview
In order to get the advanced report designer and the viewer to both PREVIEW (and in some cases print) the label reports properly you need to set up a custom page size, either in Windows “Print Management” or in the printer driver itself.
In theory it does not matter which, but if you want the report to work with multiple label printers, defining it in Windows rather that the printer driver makes the most sense.
In practice, many drivers and software programs do not follow all the rules for printing and previewing print jobs. For best results...
1.If you only plan to print to one label printer, and it can define form (page sizes) in the driver, then define the page in the driver.
2.If you experience issues with previews not working as desired, delete all custom page sizes in the driver, except the one you need. Some printers default to the default custom form size that is defined. SNBC printers have a custom form called "Custom Paper-L540" or similar. You can redefine its size (log in as admin) and use it.
at command prompt or Open dialog type: printmanagement.msc <enter>
Labels that are installed with Data Miner expect custom form named 2.25x1.25 to exist, and be named 2.25x1.25.
Once the custom page size is defined in Windows it needs to be selected in 3 places in the printer driver:
Printer Properties > Device Settings (1)
Printer Properties >Advanced Tab >Printing Defaults > Options (2) (also set paper format to inches)
Printer Properties >General Tab >Preferences > Options (3)
Then in Acme Data Miner Advanced Designer > Select the proper Printer and select the custom page size.
And in Acme Data Miner Report Viewer, Report Output tab, select proper printer and check the box to use same options next time.
Printing from the Report Preview Window
"Let Windows Manage My Default Printer" is ON... (best for end user workstations)
▪Print for Preview works, as long as user selects the right printer, which Windows then remembers.
▪Advanced Report Designer, if the report is previewed the labels preview fine (landscape) but print in portrait. Changing the properties during printing from portrait to landscape and vice verse has no effect.
"Let Windows Manage My Default Printer" is OFF... (best for advanced users designing labels)
▪If the label printer is designated the Windows Default Printer, the labels print and preview fine from everywhere, including the Advanced Report Designer.
▪If the label printer is NOT designated as the Windows Default Printer, no labels print. A print job is created, but it has 0 pages.
In Summary, if you are using Advanced Report Designer and want to print from the Preview windows do not let Windows manage your default printer and do set your label printer to be the Windows default printer, at least during design time.
